On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Supreme Court of Illinois disbarred attorney Jennifer Michelle George following a petition for reciprocal discipline. This action was taken in response to George’s prior disbarment in California due to serious misconduct.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Jennifer Michelle George,” with case no. M.R.032343.

The Illinois Supreme Court’s decision was the result of a formal petition submitted by the Administrator of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission. This petition invoked Supreme Court Rule 763, which allows for reciprocal discipline when an attorney is sanctioned in another jurisdiction. The court’s ruling effectively prohibits George from practicing law in Illinois, aligning with the disciplinary measures previously imposed in California.

George faced disciplinary proceedings in California due to a felony conviction for battery. This conviction stemmed from an incident in Florida involving her former partner, during which she used a knife to inflict injuries. Following her conviction, she received a five-year probation sentence, which included restitution payments. However, she failed to adhere to the terms of her probation, including not notifying the appropriate authorities of her criminal conviction, as mandated by Illinois Supreme Court Rule 761(a).

In California, George did not attend her disciplinary hearing, leading to a default judgment against her. The State Bar Court determined that her actions constituted sufficient grounds for disbarment, emphasizing the severity of her conduct, which they deemed warranted disciplinary action despite the absence of moral turpitude associated with her felony.

The California Supreme Court subsequently issued a disbarment order on May 20, 2024, which included monetary sanctions of $5,000. This order was one of the key documents referenced in the petition to the Illinois Supreme Court.

The Illinois Supreme Court officially allowed the petition for reciprocal discipline on November 19, 2024. The court’s ruling stated that George’s disbarment in California justified similar action in Illinois, thereby concluding her legal career in the state.

The Disposition states:

“Petition by the Administrator of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission to impose reciprocal discipline pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 763. Allowed. Respondent Jennifer Michelle George, who has been disciplined in the State of California, is disbarred in the State of Illinois.”

According to the filing, Ms. George acquired her law license in Illinois in 1994.
