On Thursday, December 14, 2023, the Indiana Supreme Court suspended Elkhart attorney Olubunmi O. Okanlami from practicing law after resisting law enforcement.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Olubunmi O. Okanlami,” with case no. 23S-D1-211.
On January 10, 2013, Okanlami resigned from the Indiana Bar while facing disciplinary charges. She was reinstated on a probationary basis on January 8, 2021, so long as she complied with monitoring through the Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP). However, the Commission filed a motion to revoke Okanlami’s probationary reinstatement, claiming she violated the terms of her JLAP monitoring agreement. Specifically, she failed to self-report multiple criminal cases filed against her as required. One of those criminal cases resulted in a guilty plea.
The Court granted the Commission’s motion to revoke Okanlami’s probationary reinstatement on April 10, 2023. Her suspension without automatic reinstatement was reimposed beginning May 22, 2023. She was ordered to not take on any new legal matters and to fulfill the duties of a suspended attorney.
In December 2023, the Indiana Supreme Court suspended Okanlami again on an interim basis after she was found guilty of resisting law enforcement, a level six felony. The court ordered the suspension to continue until further court order or resolution of any disciplinary action against her license, provided no other suspension was in effect.
The Disposition states:
“IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED that Respondent is suspended from the practice of law in this State, effective immediately. Respondent is already under suspension as ordered in Case No. 7 ISOO-1108-DI-522. Respondent is ordered to fulfill the continuing duties of a suspended attorney under Admission and Discipline Rule 23(26). The interim suspension shall continue until further order of this Court or final resolution of any resulting disciplinary action, provided no other suspension is in effect.”
