On Thursday, August 14, 2025, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals suspended attorney Rebecca Roby from practicing law for six months. This decision follows an order from the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board, which had suspended Roby by consent for the same duration due to professional misconduct.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Rebecca Roby,” with case number 2025-D071.
Roby’s suspension in the District of Columbia is retroactive to July 4, 2025, coinciding with her filing of an affidavit in compliance with D.C. Bar Rule XI, § 14(g). The court’s action was a response to the disciplinary measures taken by Virginia, as well as a previous order issued by the D.C. court on July 3, 2025. That order suspended Roby on an interim basis while requiring her to justify why reciprocal discipline should not be imposed.
The attorney’s issues stem from her undisclosed dual employment. While serving as a senior legal counsel at Ulta Beauty, Roby began a position as Vice President of Intellectual Property and Marketing at Chico’s FAS, Inc., without informing Ulta of her new role. For approximately two months, she held both full-time positions and also provided consulting services to Warshawsky Law Group, PLLC, while using Ulta’s resources without authorization.
The dual employment was discovered in August 2024 when discussions about Roby’s hiring at Chico’s revealed her simultaneous position at Ulta. Following this revelation, Roby resigned from Chico’s on September 3, 2024, citing relocation needs. However, her employment at Ulta came to an end shortly thereafter when the company’s General Counsel learned of her dual roles, leading to her suspension and resignation on September 11, 2024.
The Virginia State Bar determined that Roby’s actions constituted a violation of the Florida Rule of Professional Conduct, specifically regarding dishonesty and misrepresentation. As a result of her misconduct, she was ordered to notify all clients, opposing attorneys, and judges of her disciplinary status following her suspension.
According to Avvo.com, Ms. Roby is a business attorney in Orlando, Florida. She attended the Washington University School of Law, graduating in 1998. She acquired her law license in the District of Columbia in 2001.
