On December 18, 2023, the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board Tri-County Hearing Panel #5 ordered the suspension of Attorney Suzanna Kostovski for 90 days effective December 14, 2023.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Suzanna Kostovski,” with case no. 22-10-GA.

According to the notice, Kostovski admitted to violations in four counts of professional misconduct. She entered a plea of no contest to all the allegations in the formal complaint.

The panel found that in her role as appointed counsel for post-conviction proceedings and appellate cases, Kostovski failed to communicate adequately with her clients and neglected the legal matters entrusted to her. Specifically, in one case, she only sporadically communicated with her client and failed to file documents as ordered by the court. In another matter, she had minimal contact with her client and filed an untimely application for leave to appeal brief that did not include required citations.

In two other cases, Kostovski failed to file important briefs on time. In one instance, she held onto a supplemental brief her client provided for over 8 months before submitting it, along with a late filing motion that was subsequently denied for lacking explanation and legal citations. In the other case, she took no action on her client’s behalf for fourteen months before being replaced.

Based on Kostovski’s admissions, the panel determined she had violated Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct 1.1(b), 1.1(c), 1.2(a), 1.3, 1.4(a), and 1.4(b) by failing to competently and diligently handle the legal matters, communicate with clients, and seek the lawful objectives of her clients. She was also found to have violated conduct rules 8.4(a), 8.4(c), 9.104(1), 9.104(2), and 9.104(3).

As a result of her violations, Kostovski agreed to a 90-day suspension from practicing law according to the terms approved by the Attorney Grievance Commission. She will also be subject to conditions and must pay $1,047.96 in total costs. The suspension aims to protect the public and preserve trust in the legal profession.

According to Avvo.com, Ms. Kostovski maintained her law practice in Detroit, Michigan. She attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Kostovski has been admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1986.
