On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Nebraska Examiner reported that the Nebraska Supreme Court disbarred Bennington attorney Thomas O. Campbell for failing to pay over $400,000 in federal income taxes. Campbell, who had practiced law since 2011, pleaded guilty in December to filing false income tax returns between 2014 and 2018, during which he underreported his income by $2.8 million.

In addition to his disbarment from practicing law in Nebraska state courts, Campbell has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison and ordered to repay $407,665 in restitution. The U.S. District Court had previously imposed a ban on his ability to practice law in federal court.

The Counsel for Discipline of the Nebraska Supreme Court recommended disbarment due to Campbell’s fraudulent conduct, which was deemed damaging to the integrity of the legal profession.

Despite defense attorney Clarence Mock’s request for a review of the disbarment decision, the Supreme Court rejected any reconsideration of taking away his license to practice law. The court emphasized that findings of misconduct in one court are typically accepted as conclusive proof of guilt and not subject to relitigation in another court.
