On Thursday, July 17, 2025, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department referred Attorney Tzadok Sofer’s motion for reinstatement to the bar to a designated referee. Sofer had been suspended from practicing law for one year, following a court order issued on January 5, 2023.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Tzadok Sofer,” with case no. 2022-00928.

Sofer’s reinstatement motion was filed by his attorney, Kelly Guthy, on April 15, 2025. The motion seeks to allow Sofer to resume his legal practice after serving the suspension period. In support of his request, the Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection submitted a letter stating that it does not oppose Sofer’s reinstatement.

However, the Attorney Grievance Committee submitted an affirmation opposing the motion on May 22, 2025. This highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Sofer’s eligibility for reinstatement.

The court’s decision to refer the matter to a referee, Lester Adler, indicates that a hearing will be conducted where Sofer must demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he meets the reinstatement standards outlined in the New York Code of Rules and Regulations (22 NYCRR 1240.16).

According to Avvo.com, Mr. Sofer is a corporate and incorporation attorney in New York, New York. He acquired his law license in New York in 1993.
