On Monday, July 1, 2024, the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) issued an order suspending attorney Charles Hua Cui from practicing law before immigration courts and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Charles Hua CUI.”

The order comes after Cui received an automatic interim suspension from the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board in December 2023 due to his criminal conviction in federal court in Illinois. Cui was found guilty by a jury of bribery involving federal programs, making false statements to the FBI, and facilitating illegal activity.

In its order dated June 30th, 2024, the BIA granted a joint petition from the EOIR Disciplinary Counsel and DHS Disciplinary Counsel to suspend Cui, pending final disciplinary proceedings.

The order requires Cui to notify any clients with pending immigration cases of his suspension and to provide records showing compliance. It will also be publicly disclosed at immigration courts and DHS offices.

The Disposition states:

“The petition is granted, and the respondent is hereby suspended from the practice of law before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Immigration Courts. and DHS pending final disposition of this proceeding.”
