On Thursday, December 1, 2022, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ordered the indefinite suspension of Bowie attorney Sylvia L. Adams in consideration of Adams’ suspension from the state of Maryland.

The case, titled In Re Sylvia L. Adams was brought by the Disciplinary Counsel. Case #DDN2021-D201.

On October 28, 2021, Adams was indefinitely suspended from the practice of law by consent in the State of Maryland for failure to file federal or state income tax returns for three years and failing to provide complete and timely responses to disciplinary authorities’ requests for information and documentation. The Court ordered the suspension pending final disposition of the proceeding and directed her to show cause why the reciprocal discipline should not be imposed on her. Adams, however, neither filed a response nor her D.C. Bar R. XI, § 14(g) affidavit.

Based on the foregoing, the Court ruled against Adams and ordered her suspension.

The dispositive part of the Order reads:

“ORDERED that Sylvia L. Adams is hereby indefinitely suspended from the practice of law in the District of Columbia with reinstatement conditioned on a showing of fitness. Respondent may seek reinstatement after five years or after being reinstated by the state of Maryland, whichever is first.”

Adams’ suspension will not begin to run until such time she files an affidavit in compliance with D.C. Bar R. XI, § 14(g).

Prior to the suspension, Ms. Adams practiced in Bowie, Maryland. She has been licensed in the District of Columbia, license #468683, as well as in Maryland. Her info can be found on Avvo.
