California Supreme Court disbars Lodi attorney over felony conviction involving moral turpitude

On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the Supreme Court of California ruled on the disciplinary charges against Lodi attorney Aliyah Sabreen Abdullah for a felony conviction.

The case, titled In the Matter of Aliyah Sabreen Abdullah, was brought by the Office of the Chief Trial Counsel of the State Bar (OCTC) under case no. 16-C-12076.

Respondent was charged and later convicted of grand theft before the Superior of California, County of San Joaquin on November 15, 2021. Prior to his conviction, the Court ordered that the Respondent be placed on interim suspension, effective May 8, 2017.

The OCTC transmitted proof of the finality of Abdullah’s conviction to the Court on April 29, 2022, and filed a request for summary disbarment of Respondent, pursuant to California Rules of Cort, rule 9.10(a), which states:

After a judgment of conviction becomes final, “the Supreme Court shall summarily disbar the attorney if the offense is a felony. . .  and an element of the offense is the specific intent to deceive, defraud, steal, or make or suborn false statement, or involved moral turpitude. The record of conviction establishes both criteria for summary disbarment.

The OCTC, in its Recommendation of Summary Disbarmentrecommended that the Respondent be disbarred from the practice of law in California.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court of California ruled for the disbarment of Respondent based on her felony conviction.

The Order reads:

“The court orders that Aliyah Sabreen Abdullah (Respondent), State Bar Number 282927, is summarily disbarred from the practice of law and that Respondent’s name is stricken from the roll of attorneys.”

Ms. Abdullah obtained her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis School of Law. Prior to this disbarment, she had practiced in Lodi, California, and had been admitted to the California bar. Her info can be found on LinkedIn.
