On Thursday, June 15, 2023, the Supreme Court of the State of New York Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department ruled on the application for resignation from law practice filed by attorney William Edward Shannon.

The case is titled “In the Matter of Attorneys in Violation of Judiciary Law § 468-a” case no. PM-130-23.

According to the court document, Shannon stopped complying with the registration requirements in 2004, leading to his suspension from law practice in 2014. Shannon has remained suspended and has not fulfilled the registration obligations since then.

Shannon filed a motion made returnable on May 12, 2023, seeking to resign from the New York State Bar while the disciplinary proceeding against him is ongoing. The Attorney Grievance Committee did not oppose Shannon’s resignation.

Along with Shannon’s motion, he submitted a supporting affidavit admitting that he engaged in misconduct due to his failure to comply with Judiciary Law § 468-a. Shannon acknowledged his failure to fulfill his registration obligations and continuing legal education requirements in this state.

The filing states:

“Respondent further attests that his resignation is given freely, voluntarily and without coercion or duress, and he also acknowledges that the resignation, if granted, will result in his disbarment and that his name will be stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law in this state.”

In light of the foregoing facts and admissions of Shannon, the Court entered an order accepting Shannon’s resignation.

The disposition reads:

“ORDERED that the application of respondent to resign as an attorney and counselor-at-law is granted and his disciplinary resignation is accepted; and it is further

ORDERED that respondent is disbarred and his name is stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law of the State of New York, effective immediately; . . .”

Mr. William Edward Shannon earned a law degree from the University of Connecticut. He practices in Connecticut. Shannon has been admitted to practice in New York in 1998, license no. 2917714.
