On Thursday, October 3, 2024, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals disbarred attorney Lawrence J. Anderson based on the state of Maryland’s disciplinary action against him.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Lawrence J. Anderson,” with case no. 24-BG-0693.

The Court’s order stemmed from Anderson being disbarred by the Supreme Court of Maryland on February 22, 2024, for violating rules regarding the safekeeping of property and conduct unbecoming of an attorney. Anderson and Maryland Bar Counsel had filed a joint petition, which the state high court granted, disbarring Anderson and removing him from the register of attorneys.

As a result of the Maryland disbarment, the D.C. Court of Appeals suspended Anderson’s law license in the District on an interim basis on August 13, 2024, and directed him to show cause why reciprocal discipline should not be imposed. However, Anderson did not file a response or the required D.C. Bar Rule XI, Section 14(g) affidavit.

In its October 3, 2024 order, the D.C. Court of Appeals disbarred Anderson with reinstatement conditioned upon him regaining his law license in Maryland. The Court explained there is a presumption of imposing identical discipline to another jurisdiction unless an exception is established.

According to avvo.com, Mr. Anderson is a bankruptcy & debt attorney in Alexandria, Virginia. He attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, graduating in 1991. He acquired his law license in the District of Columbia in 1993.
