On Friday, August 22, 2025, Above The Law reported that the Alaska Bar Association’s Disciplinary Board recommended the disbarment of former federal judge Joshua Kindred, previously appointed by former President Donald Trump. Kindred, who resigned from the District of Alaska bench in 2024 after four years of service, faces allegations of serious ethical violations.
A Special Committee appointed by the Ninth Circuit investigated ethics complaints against Kindred, uncovering instances of sexual misconduct. The committee found that Kindred fostered a sexualized relationship with one of his law clerks and created a hostile work environment for others. Additionally, an Assistant United States Attorney, later identified as Karen Vandergaw, sent Kindred nude photographs. Vandergaw claimed she felt pressured to do so. Despite this, she continued to appear before Kindred in court.
The Disciplinary Board’s recommendation stems from Kindred’s violation of three Alaska Rules of Professional Conduct. Two violations relate to false statements made during the investigation into his conduct, while the third concerns the sexual harassment allegations within his chambers.
Disciplinary counsel argued that Kindred’s actions, including dishonesty and fostering a harmful work environment, caused significant personal and professional harm to multiple law clerks, warranting disbarment. Kindred has not responded to the disciplinary charges, which, under Alaska law, results in their admission.
The recommendation now awaits a final decision from the Alaska Supreme Court, which will determine whether Kindred will be disbarred.
Public reaction to the allegations has been strong, with bar regulators reporting numerous calls from outraged individuals demanding action after the findings became public.
