On Friday, September 20, 2024, the Supreme Court of Illinois issued an order suspending former McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Ian Jacobson from practicing law for one year.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Scott Ian Jacobson,” with case no. M.R.032292.
The order stems from a disciplinary case brought by the Administrator of the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) against Jacobson in 2022. The ARDC complaint accused Jacobson of violating Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 8.4(c) by engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation.
Specifically, the complaint alleged that in 2016 Jacobson intentionally made false statements about his trial experience on a judicial application by listing a case he did not try. Additionally, in 2019 Jacobson falsely represented his trial record during a job interview with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
On May 9, 2024, the ARDC Review Board recommended a one-year suspension after adopting the findings of the Hearing Board that Jacobson committed the alleged misconduct. The Review Board cited aggravating factors such as Jacobson not accepting responsibility or expressing remorse.
In its September 20, 2024 order, the Illinois Supreme Court denied Jacobson’s petition to file exceptions to the Review Board’s recommendation. The Court then suspended Jacobson’s law license for one year, effective October 11, 2024, adopting the review panel’s suggested discipline. Jacobson must also reimburse the Client Protection Program Trust Fund for any payouts due to misconduct arising from his conduct before the termination of the period of suspension.
According to avvo.com, Mr. Jacobson is an attorney in Elgin, Illinois. He acquired his law license in Illinois in 2010.
