On Monday, April 10, 2023, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled on the verified motion seeking the revocation of Elkhart attorney Olubunmi O. Okanlami’s probationary reinstatement.

The case is styled ‘In the Matter of Olubunmi O. Okanlami’ with case no, 71S00-1108-DI-522.

According to the court document, Respondent resigned from the Indiana bar on January 10, 2013. She sought reinstatement by filing her petition in 2019. Following an evidentiary hearing, the Court ordered her conditional reinstatement on January 8, 2021, subject to her completion of at least two years of probation with monitoring by the Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP).

The Commission sought the revocation of Respondent’s reinstatement claiming that the latter has materially violated the terms of her JLAP monitoring agreement and that Respondent has had multiple criminal cases filed against her and that she failed to self-report those cases to JLAP as required.

The filing states:

“. . . one of these cases has resulted in a guilty plea and the others remain pending. Respondent has filed no response to the Commission’s motion despite having been granted an extension of time, and her failure to do so is deemed an admission of the Commission’s allegations.”

The Court, having been duly advised by the Commission, ruled against the respondent.

The order reads:

“. . the Court GRANTS the motion and revokes Respondent’s probationary reinstatement to the practice of law. Respondent’s suspension without automatic reinstatement is reimposed, beginning May 22, 2023. Respondent shall not undertake any new legal matters between service of this order and the effective date of the suspension, and Respondent shall fulfill all the duties of a suspended attorney under Admission and DisciplineRule 23(26).”

Respondent may seek reinstatement as long as Respondent complies with the requirements for reinstatement, pays the costs of the proceeding, and performs the obligations of a suspended attorney.

According to her LinkedIn page, Ms. Olubunmi O. Okanlami is a public defender in Elkhart County. She has been licensed in Indiana.
