On Friday, January 12, 2024, the Indiana Supreme Court ordered the suspension of attorney Rebecca L. Balanoff from practicing law in the state.
The case is titled ‘In the Matter of Rebecca L. Balanoff,” with case no. 23S-DI-280.
The cited infraction stems from Attorney Balanoff’s noncooperation with a disciplinary investigation on a case involving her.
On October 28, 2023, the Court ordered Ms. Balanoff to show cause why she should not be suspended for failing to cooperate with the Disciplinary Commission’s investigation into a grievance filed against her identified as case number 24-0096. Ms. Balanoff did not respond to this initial show cause order from the Court.
On November 14, 2023, the Disciplinary Commission filed a Request for Ruling and to Tax Costs, stating that Ms. Balanoff still had not cooperated with their investigation into the grievance. She did not respond to this request either.
Due to Ms. Balanoff’s continued failure to cooperate, the Indiana Supreme Court issued an order on January 12, 2024, to suspend her law license immediately. The suspension will remain in effect until the Executive Director of the Disciplinary Commission certifies to the Court that Ms. Balanoff has fully cooperated with their investigation.
The Court also ordered Ms. Balanoff to fulfill the duties of a suspended attorney, which include notifying clients of her suspension and assisting them in finding new legal representation. Additionally, she must reimburse the Disciplinary Commission $525.88 for costs associated with the suspension proceedings.
According to Avvo, Attorney Rebecca L. Balanoff is based in Merrillville, Indiana. She acquired her license to practice in the state in 1980.
