On Thursday, January 25, 2024, the Iowa Supreme Court issued an order suspending the law license of attorney Steven Craig Kaiser for 60 days for ethical violations related to his handling of an estate matter.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Steven Craig Kaiser,” with case no. 23-2066.

The order stems from disciplinary proceedings initiated by the Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board against Kaiser. In October 2023, the Board filed a complaint against Kaiser alleging multiple violations of Iowa’s rules of professional conduct in his handling of the Porter estate from 2016 to 2023. Kaiser subsequently filed an affidavit in December 2023 consenting to the suspension of his license for up to 90 days. In its response, the Board argued Kaiser’s misconduct warranted a 60-day suspension.

The Board’s response detailed Kaiser’s violations. It said Kaiser neglected the Porter estate for seven years, missing deadlines and requesting numerous extensions. He also made misrepresentations to the court by claiming extensions were requested by the estate executor when they were not.

Additionally, the Board found Kaiser had conflicts of interest. He filed a claim against the estate for legal fees he alleged were owed from prior work, while acting as the attorney for the estate. He also continued representing the estate executor, who was his wife, during a contentious divorce.

The Board also accused Kaiser of failing to timely respond to its lawful requests for information about the complaints against him during its investigation. In its response, the Board identified several aggravating factors, including Kaiser’s experience as an attorney since 1978, harm caused to clients, multiple rule violations, and a prior disciplinary suspension from 2007. It said a 60-day suspension was most comparable with past cases.

In its January 25, 2024 order, the Iowa Supreme Court agreed with the Board’s recommendation and suspended Kaiser’s law license for 60 days. The suspension is effective 10 days from the date of the order, allowing Kaiser to cease all legal practice and notify clients.

The Disposition states:

“The Board recommends suspension of Kaiser’s license for a period of 60 days. Pursuant to Iowa Court Rule 34.16(3), the court orders that Steven Craig Kaiser’s license to practice law in this state is suspended for a period of 60 days.”

According to avvo.com, Mr. Kaiser is a business attorney in Woodward, Iowa. He attended the Drake University. He acquired his law license in Iowa in 1978.
