On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Supreme Court of Iowa issued an order suspending the law license of Attorney Matthew Charles Holmer. The suspension stems from reciprocal discipline related to a prior suspension by the Illinois Supreme Court.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Matthew Charles Holmer,” with case no. 25–1980.
The Iowa court’s action follows a notice and order issued on November 25, 2025, regarding the Illinois suspension, which was for one year but stayed after six months with a two-year probation period. The Iowa Supreme Court directed the Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board to assess whether imposing identical discipline in Iowa would be appropriate, considering potential factors such as severity or leniency.
According to a court document, notification of the matter was sent to Holmer via restricted certified mail to his last known address. However, neither Holmer nor the Disciplinary Board responded to the notice and order. Consequently, the court found no reason to deviate from reciprocal discipline.
The order mandates that Holmer’s Iowa law license be suspended for six months and that this action become a matter of public record. The suspension period commences on the date of the order and applies to all aspects of legal practice.
The court also stipulated that Holmer must adhere to the notification requirements outlined in Iowa Court Rule 34.23(2). Should Holmer wish to resume practicing law in Iowa after the suspension, he must submit a written application for reinstatement, as per Iowa Court Rule 34.25(1). He will need to meet all applicable reinstatement requirements under Rule 34.25, including demonstrating that he did not practice law during the suspension. Upon filing the application and providing satisfactory proof of compliance, the court will schedule a hearing. Holmer is also responsible for covering the costs associated with the disciplinary action, as per Iowa Court Rule 36.24(1).
According to Avvo.com, Mr. Holmer is an attorney in Rock Island, Illinois. He acquired his law license in Iowa in 2011.
