On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the Supreme Court of Iowa suspended the law license of Attorney Beatriz Andrea Mate-Kodjo due to a disability or incapacity that prevents her from fulfilling her professional responsibilities.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Beatriz Andrea Mate-Kodjo,” with case no. 25-0673.
The decision followed an application from the Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board, which cited Mate-Kodjo’s inability to carry out her duties as a lawyer.
Mate-Kodjo, after consulting with counsel, agreed to an immediate suspension of her license and waived her right to a hearing before the court to contest the suspension. The court’s order stated that the suspension would remain in effect until further notice. The ruling also waived the standard 20-day notice period required under Iowa Court Rule 34.17, citing compelling reasons for the immediate action.
The court outlined provisions for Mate-Kodjo to seek reinstatement. She may file a petition to lift or modify the suspension by presenting clear and convincing evidence that her disability or incapacity has been resolved and that she is fully capable of resuming legal practice.
Additionally, the Iowa Supreme Court Client Security Commission was directed to work with the Chief Judge of the 5th Judicial District to determine whether a trustee should be appointed to manage Mate-Kodjo’s client matters during the suspension. If a trustee is appointed, the order must be sent to the Supreme Court clerk for confirmation.
The Disposition states:
“The court orders as follows: Beatriz Andrea Mate-Kodjo’s license to practice law in the State of Iowa is suspended pending further order of this court. Upon the showing of compelling cause in this case, the court waives the 20-day notice provisions of the Iowa Court.”
According to Avvo.com, Ms. Mate-Kodjo is an attorney in Pella, Iowa. She acquired her law license in Iowa in 2014.
