On Thursday, September 15, 2022, the Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana ruled on the Petition for Interim Suspension filed by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel in relation to the charges of attorney discipline against Respondent New Orleans Attorney Nicole E. Burdett.
The case title In Re: Nicole E. Burdett, was brought by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, Case No. 2022-B-1294.
The ruling suspends Burdett’s law license on an interim basis, pending further orders from the Court.
On July 28, 2022, Burdett was found guilty of filing fraudulent tax returns.
The Court, after consideration of the Petition for Interim Suspension filed by the Office of Disciplinary
Counsel and the Respondent’s response thereto ordered:
“IT IS ORDERED that Nicole E. Burdett, Louisiana Bar Roll number 32972, be and she hereby is suspended from the practice of law on an interim basis pursuant to Supreme Court Rule XIX, § 19, pending further orders of this court. Pursuant to Supreme Court Rule XIX, § 26(E), this order is effective immediately.”
IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that necessary disciplinary proceedings be instituted in accordance with Supreme Court Rule XIX, §§ 11 and 19.”
Weimer, CJ. dissents, stating that he would defer ruling on the ODC’s petition for interim suspension of respondent to allow US District Judge Lance Africk sufficient time to decide a pending motion for judgment of acquittal in the criminal case against respondent.
