On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court issued an order appointing Timothy Norton, Esq. as the Limited Receiver for the law practice of the deceased attorney Joe Lewis. This decision follows a petition submitted by the Board of Overseers of the Bar, aiming to ensure the proper management of Lewis’s firm, Port City Legal, LLC.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Joe Lewis, Esq.,” with case no. BAR-25-1.

The court’s order grants Norton and his agents comprehensive authority to oversee the law office, which includes securing professional files, managing firm and client funds, and retrieving all property associated with the practice. Norton is tasked with obtaining access to Attorney Lewis’s computer systems and any mobile devices used for business, as well as managing emails and other accounts relevant to the law firm.

In addition to these responsibilities, the Limited Receiver is expected to inventory client files and facilitate the transition of clients who wish to remain with Port City Legal. Norton will also coordinate with associate attorneys to assist clients in finding new legal representation for ongoing matters.

The order highlights the importance of client communication, requiring Norton to notify former clients about the law firm’s status and provide them with opportunities to retrieve their property. Furthermore, Norton is authorized to manage financial accounts related to the practice, ensuring that all payments are directed appropriately.

Attorney Norton will serve in this capacity for a maximum of six months or until discharged by the court. Additionally, Attorney Mara RH King has been designated as Limited Co-Receiver to manage cases where Norton or his firm may have conflicts of interest.
