On Thursday, September 12, 2024, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department granted the application and accepted the resignation for nondisciplinary reasons of attorney Michael J. Chulak.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Michael J. Chulak,” with case no. PM-177-24.

Chulak has been a practicing attorney in New York since 1986 and is currently licensed to practice law in New Jersey, where he maintains a business address in Jersey City. In July 2024, Chulak applied to resign his New York law license for nondisciplinary reasons. He submitted an affidavit to the court in support of his application.

The Attorney Grievance Committee for the Third Judicial Department, which oversees attorney conduct in the region, did not oppose Chulak’s resignation. In August, the Deputy Chief Attorney for the committee wrote a letter to the court affirming their non-opposition.

In a unanimous ruling, the five justices of the Third Judicial Department accepted Chulak’s resignation application. Their decision formally strips Chulak of his ability to practice law in New York and directs him to return his Attorney Secure Pass. He can no longer provide legal counsel or services to clients in the state.

Though permitted to voluntarily end his bar membership, Chulak must still adhere to prohibitions on engaging in the unlicensed practice of law or holding himself out as an attorney in New York.

According to the filing, Mr. Chulak acquired his license in New York in 1986.
