On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the State of New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division Third Judicial Department ordered the disbarment of Attorney Jose Castillo Escano due to nearly two decades of accumulated misconduct and violations.

The case is titled ‘In the Matter of Jose Castillo Escano,’ with case no. PM-250-23.

Attorney Escano faced charges for multiple instances of misconduct and violations of registration and probation laws between 2003 and 2023.

Attorney Escano began facing disciplinary issues in 2003. That year, he failed to comply with the biennial registration requirements of New York’s Judiciary Law. As a result, in 2009 the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court suspended him from practicing law in New York. His suspension still remains in effect today.

Meanwhile, in California, problems continued for Attorney Escano in 2014. That year, he was charged by the state’s disciplinary authorities with falsely reporting his completion of required continuing legal education credits. He also failed to cooperate with the investigation into his conduct. Attorney Escano initially received a brief suspension but was placed on probation with various conditions.

In 2020, Attorney Escano’s violations escalated. He failed to abide by the probationary conditions for a second time in California. As a result, the Supreme Court of California disbarred him from practicing law in that state in October 2020.

This led the Attorney Grievance Committee of New York’s Third Judicial Department to file a motion in 2023 seeking reciprocal discipline against Attorney Escano. However, Attorney Escano did not respond to the motion. In November 2023, the Appellate Division disbarred Attorney Escano from practicing law in New York as well, due to his misconduct and violations established in California.

The court ordered that any future reinstatement in New York would require proof that Attorney Escano was reinstated in California and that he was now in compliance with New York’s registration requirements. Thus, Jose Escano’s legal career faced its ultimate sanction across two states due to his accumulated violations and failure to cooperate.

The disposition reads:

“ORDERED that respondent is disbarred and his name is stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law of the State of NewYork, effective immediately.”

According to allcaliforniaattorneys.com, Attorney Jose Castillo Escano is from California and attended the Georgetown University Law Ctr. He was admitted to the California Bar on December 7, 1999, bus has since been disbarred. According to this filing, Attorney Escano was admitted to practice in New York in 2001.
