On Monday, December 18, 2023, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a complaint against Attorney Rodney Eugene Haven before the Board of Professional Conduct of the Supreme Court of Ohio.

The case is titled “Disciplinary Counsel v. Rodney Eugene Hven, Esq.” with case no. 2023-044.

Rules 8.4(d) and 8.4(h) of the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct were cited in the complaint.

The Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct can be found here.

On September 25, 2023, attorney Rodney Eugene Haven experienced an apparent mental health episode while testifying in his own divorce proceedings in Wayne County court. During cross-examination, Mr. Haven refused to directly answer questions and made disturbing statements. He became increasingly agitated.

Court Magistrate Jennifer Svec suspended the hearing and later issued an order finding Mr. Haven’s “demeanor, distress, outbursts” raised concerns about his “mental well-being.” She determined a psychological evaluation was needed to assess his competency.

Attorney Haven had been under a civil protection order from his estranged wife, Yaovalak Haven, since January 2023 related to prior threats and incidents of domestic violence. He was also convicted of gun and drunk driving charges from an incident in December 2022 where he barricaded himself in his vehicle with a firearm while intoxicated.

Attorney Haven’s evaluation was scheduled for November 28th but its findings are not yet known.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a complaint on December 18, 2023, alleging Mr. Haven’s conduct violated Ohio rules for lawyers regarding conduct prejudicial to justice and fitness to practice. He now faces allegations that his conduct violated professional responsibility rules for lawyers regarding competence, fitness, and bringing disrepute to the legal profession, for which the Relator asked for an appropriate sanction.

The recommendation reads:

“Relator requests that respondent be found in violation of the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct and be sanctioned accordingly.”

According to Avvo, Attorney Rodney Eugene Haven is an intellectual property attorney based in Wooster, Ohio. He graduated from the Akron, C. Blake McDowell Law Center and acquired his license in Ohio in 2007.
