On Monday, February 6, 2023,  the U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review Board of Immigration Appeals suspended attorney Jim Melo from the practice before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Immigration Courts, and DHS.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Jim Melo” and was brought by the Disciplinary Counsel for the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the Disciplinary Counsel for DHS with case no. D2022-0204.

The Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the North Carolina State Bar issued an Order on June 20, 2022, suspending Mr. Melo from the practice of law in North Carolina for five years. Consistent with said suspension, the Disciplinary Counsel for the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the Disciplinary Counsel for DHS filed a Joint Petition for the immediate suspension of the respondent before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Immigration Courts, and DHS.

In a review of the suspension of the respondent from North Carolina and the Joint Petition for Immediate suspension, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals granted the Petition. Thus, suspending attorney Jim Melo from the practice.

The respondent is also mandated to notify, in writing, any clients with cases currently pending before the Board of Immigration Appeals, Immigration Courts, or DHS that he has been suspended.
