On October 25, 2024, CNHI News reported that Raleigh County Prosecutor Ben Hatfield resigned from his position. Hatfield, a Republican, had been facing mounting controversy and lawsuits alleging inappropriate behavior and creating a hostile work environment.
Hatfield wrote in his resignation letter that after reflection, he decided to step down in order to focus on his family and other personal pursuits. Although Hatfield is on the ballot for re-election in November, he stated that if he wins, he will refuse the office as his decision to resign is final.
The Raleigh County Commission appointed Tom Truman as the acting prosecutor until a special meeting can be held. Truman is an experienced attorney who previously served in the Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office from 1981 to 2022. He will take over handling cases from Hatfield, including a high-profile murder trial.
Hatfield had been under investigation by the West Virginia Commission on Special Investigations following complaints of misconduct. He was also facing two pending civil lawsuits and a petition for domestic violence protection. His resignation comes after months of controversy surrounding his behavior in office.
