On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the Supreme Court of California ordered the suspension of attorney Kevin Michael Cowan. The case is entitled “In the Matter of Kevin Michael Cowan” and was brought by the State Bar of California with case no. S277459.
On April 1, 2022, it was stated that the respondent, Mr. Cowan has been convicted of violating the penal code section 245 which constitutes assault by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury. In the said order, the State Bar provided that the said conviction which is a felony in its nature may or may not involve moral turpitude. Nevertheless, the State Bar of California, pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 6102, ordered that the respondent be suspended from the practice of law.
Consistent with the order, the Office of Chief Trial Counsel of the State Bar was ordered to submit evidence of finality or provide an update on finality. Thus, an order suspending the respondent was issued by the Supreme Court of California.
In the order of the Supreme Court, the respondent was mandated to comply with the other conditions of probation recommended by the hearing department of the State Bar Court in its order approving the stipulation filed on October 26, 2022. And at the expiration of the period of probation, if the respondent has already complied with the terms of the said probation, the period of stayed suspension will be satisfied and the suspension will be terminated.
The Order states:
“The court orders that Kevin Michael Cowan (Respondent), State Bar Number 284271, is suspended from the practice of law in California for one year, execution of that period of suspension stays, and Respondent is placed on probation for one year.”
