On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, KSTP reported that a St. Croix County assistant district attorney, Bela “Alec” Ballo, faces serious charges after allegedly threatening three judges and engaging in reckless driving. The 33-year-old was charged last Friday with three counts of threatening a judge, disorderly conduct, possession of THC, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a criminal complaint, a colleague of Ballo’s informed law enforcement that Ballo expressed frustration over judicial decisions affecting his work. During a phone call, he referenced Judges Scott R. Needham, Scott J. Nordstrand, and Edward F. Vlack, claiming their rulings were detrimental to him and suggesting they were intentionally targeting him. The complaint stated that Ballo became increasingly agitated during the conversation, shouting that the judges “need to bleed.”

In addition to the threats, the complaint details a March 26 incident where Ballo’s wife reported him to the authorities for reckless driving. While traveling with his family from the Minneapolis airport to Hudson, Ballo allegedly drove over 90 mph and swerved in and out of traffic, all while yelling at his wife.

Investigators also noted that Ballo’s wife indicated he consumes marijuana daily after work. She provided law enforcement with information about where he stored the substance, which tested positive for THC.
