On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the Supreme Court of Minnesota issued an order transferring attorney Peter J. Balega to disability inactive status due to medical reasons. The order came after the Director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility filed a petition.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Peter J. Balega,” with case no. A24-1608.

According to the filing, Balega has a medical condition that prevents him from assisting in his defense in an ongoing disciplinary investigation against him. Medical evidence provided to the Director also confirmed his disability. Balega stipulated with the Director that his condition prevents him from competently representing clients or participating in his defense.

Per the order, Balega is prohibited from practicing law such as providing legal advice, consulting with clients, or handling any legal matters while on disability inactive status. He must also notify current and past clients as well as opposing counsel and courts about his change in license status.

The Disposition states:

“IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT: Respondent Peter J. Balega is transferred to disability inactive status under Rule 28, RLPR, effective immediately.”

According to avvo.com, Mr. Balega is an attorney in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He attended the Baylor University School of Law. He acquired his law license in Minnesota in 1979.
