On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, NJ.com reported that a Bergen County attorney was arrested for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his clients.

Martin Fishman, a 73-year-old attorney from Franklin Lakes, was charged with second-degree theft by unlawful taking or disposition, theft by deception, theft by failure to make required disposition of property received, misapplication of entrusted property, impersonation, and forgery.

An investigation revealed that between 2014 and 2023, Fishman failed to repay loans, drafted fraudulent mortgage notes, issued bounced checks for real estate closings, and misused funds from an attorney trust account belonging to at least four clients. His law licenses in New Jersey and New York had been suspended or revoked, with the New Jersey suspension citing a $90,000 misappropriation of funds.

Together, officials say Fishman stole over $600,000 from clients who then lost contact with him as they attempted to recoup their money. He was taken to the Bergen County Jail after being arrested and will face a judge for an initial appearance.
