On Thursday, August 24, 2023, the Supreme Court of Iowa ordered the temporary suspension of attorney Steven J. Swan for his failure to cooperate with the Client Security Commission’s efforts to conduct an audit of his lawyer trust account.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Steven J. Swan,” with Case No. 23-1353.

According to the court document, the Client Security Commission had filed a Certificate of Noncompliance on August 24, 2023, notifying the court of Swan’s failure to provide the requested trust account information. The request for this information had been made by the Director of Client Security on July 6, 2023, in order to complete the audit. Despite the Commission’s efforts, Swan did not comply with the request.

Thereafter, on August 7, 2023, the Commission sent a notice to Swan, informing him that his license to practice law would be suspended unless he rectified the delinquency or filed a request for a hearing to demonstrate why his license should not be suspended. The notice was sent via email and regular mail, as well as by restricted certified mail with a return receipt requested. The certified mail was received and signed for by Swan.

The Commission confirmed that Swan neither provided the requested information nor filed a request for a hearing within the 15-day notice period.

Consequently, the Commission requested a temporary suspension of Swan’s license to practice law in Iowa.

In response to the Commission’s request, the Supreme Court of Iowa determined that it was appropriate to temporarily suspend Steven J. Swan’s license to practice law in the state.

According to Avvo.com, Mr. Swan had been working at Swan and Associates Law Offices, located at Keokuk. He has been admitted to practice in Iowa and Illinois.
