On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the State of Michigan Attorney Disciplinary Board ordered the suspension of attorney Hanna M. Renna for her misconduct involving the manipulation of a photo pack by printing copies and renumbering them without the knowledge of the State or the witness in criminal proceedings.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Hanna M. Renna” with case no. 23-13-RD.

On May 1, 2023, the Michigan Attorney Disciplinary Board suspended the respondent as a form of reciprocal discipline after her earlier suspension in the State of Florida for her conduct during the representation of a criminal defendant. The matter under scrutiny centers around a deposition involving a minor witness who had previously identified the respondent’s client as the perpetrator from a photo pack. Disturbingly, it has been alleged that prior to the deposition, the respondent manipulated the photo pack by printing copies and renumbering them without the knowledge of the State or the witness.

During the deposition, the respondent proceeded to present the witness with a photograph of a different individual from the one originally identified by the witness. This deceptive action took place when questioning the witness about identification, effectively misleading both the State and the witness. Shockingly, the respondent then utilized the identification made during this deceptive deposition as part of the basis for filing a motion to suppress.

The report states:

“Due to this conduct, the Supreme Court of Florida suspended the respondent for 90 days with terms and conditions. Following this event, the Grievance Administrator filed a notice of the filing of reciprocal discipline against the respondent to discipline the same in the state of Michigan.”

Pursuant to this, on May 31, 2023, the State of Michigan Attorney Disciplinary Board ordered the suspension of the respondent.

The Disposition states:

“An order regarding the imposition of reciprocal discipline was served upon respondent on March 15, 2023. The 21-day period referenced in MCR 9.120(C)(2)(b) expired without objection by either party and the respondent was deemed to be in default. Based on that default, the Attorney Discipline Board ordered that the respondent’s license to practice law in Michigan be suspended for 90 days. Costs were assessed in the amount of $1,509.00.”
