On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, the Director of the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility filed a petition with the Minnesota Supreme Court seeking disciplinary action against attorney Jason P. Steck.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Jason P. Steck.”

The petition alleges Steck engaged in multiple instances of misconduct during his legal representations. First, Steck represented five co-defendants in a criminal case involving Medicaid fraud at assisted living facilities. However, the petition states one of the co-defendants, Theresa Olson, paid Steck’s legal fees for all five defendants. According to the petition, Steck failed to address the conflicts of interest in the joint representation and did not obtain proper consent from the clients.

Second, the petition alleges Steck missed a filing deadline in an appellate case involving the termination of parental rights. Steck filed the petition for review eight days late with the Minnesota Supreme Court. The petition states Steck should have been aware of the expedited filing deadline based on the nature of the case.

Finally, the petition claims Steck failed to properly review and communicate court notices to a client in a Child in Need of Protection case. The petition asserts Steck should have familiarized himself with court procedures in Hennepin County, where the case was heard.

The Director is requesting the Minnesota Supreme Court impose appropriate disciplinary sanctions against Steck.

The petition states:

“WHEREFORE, the Director respectfully prays for an order of this Court imposing appropriate discipline, awarding costs and disbursements pursuant to the Rules on Lawyers Professional Responsibility, and for such other, further or different relief as may be just and proper.”

According to Avvo, Mr. Steck is a criminal defense attorney in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He obtained his law license in Minnesota in 2012.
