On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, KVUEabc reported that a Hays County attorney had been disciplined by the State Bar of Texas for her actions related to hiring an unlicensed lawyer.

Dorothy Lawrence, owner of the Dorothy Butler Law Firm in Dripping Springs, was given a two-year probated suspension by the Bar. This means she can continue practicing law but must adhere to certain terms outlined in the judgment against her. The State Bar conducted a hearing in November on grievances filed by six former clients regarding Lawrence’s conduct.

As part of her probation, Lawrence is prohibited from engaging in further professional misconduct or breaking any criminal laws. She must also keep the Bar updated on her contact information, comply with continuing legal education and IOLTA requirements, promptly respond to any investigation inquiries, and pay $1,600 in fees and expenses. Her probation started on January 1, 2024, and will remain in effect through December 2025.

The judgment stems from Lawrence hiring Nichole Humes as an attorney at her firm, despite Humes not being licensed to practice law. Humes was charged with unlawfully practicing law and is facing trial on those charges. If found guilty, she could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

While Lawrence’s probation is now in place, several other complaints against her remain pending with the State Bar.
