On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Supreme Court of Illinois suspended attorney James Gregory Las Cola from practicing law for one year and until further order of the court. This decision follows a motion by the Administrator of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission to approve and confirm the report and recommendation of the Hearing Board.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of James Gregory LasCola,” with case no. M.R.032746.

The suspension stems from a disciplinary case (No. 2024PR00025) initiated by the Commission, as detailed in a formal complaint filed on May 1, 2024. The complaint outlined multiple allegations of professional misconduct.

The allegations include neglecting client matters and failing to refund unearned fees. Specifically, Las Cola was accused of failing to complete estate planning documents for clients Arthur and Rosie Coleman after receiving a $1,750 retainer. Despite repeated attempts by the Colemans to communicate with him over several months, Las Cola allegedly did not respond or provide any refund of the unearned portion of the retainer.

In a separate matter, Las Cola was retained in September 2022 to handle an eviction case for Brandon Robertson’s company. While Las Cola filed initial documents, he allegedly did not substantially work on the case. Robertson terminated Las Cola’s services in December of that year due to a lack of communication. Similar to the Colemans, Robertson requested an accounting and refund of unearned fees, which Las Cola purportedly failed to provide.

Furthermore, the complaint accused Las Cola of dishonesty and non-cooperation during the disciplinary investigation into the Robertson matter. These accusations include providing fabricated billing records, falsely claiming he sent documents, and ignoring subpoenas to produce documents.

The Disposition states:
