On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Katrina Wegmann filed a petition for reinstatement to Florida after being suspended for three years.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Katrina Wegmann.”
According to the petition filed in the Supreme Court of Florida, Wegmann was suspended from the practice of law on December 23, 2020, due to criminal charges against her for insurance fraud second degree and grand theft second degree. She had been arrested on January 28, 2020, for her alleged involvement with a public adjusting company.
Wegmann immediately disclosed her arrest to the Florida Bar. Without contesting the charges, she entered into a stipulation agreeing to the three-year suspension. She also cooperated fully with authorities in their investigation and prosecution of other individuals involved in the case.
In February 2020, Wegmann entered a pretrial diversion agreement where she was required to complete a values program, make full restitution payments, and continue cooperating with law enforcement. All terms of the agreement were satisfied, including the restitution being paid in full prior to the agreed deadline. In January 2023, the criminal charges against her were officially dropped via a nolle prosequi before the conclusion of related prosecutions, as allowed under the agreement.
During her suspension, Wegmann has been working as a paralegal in family law. She has held a job at Vilar Law, P.A. since September 2020. Employers and colleagues submitted letters of support vouching for Wegmann’s strong character and work ethic. They described the incident leading to suspension as an aberration and expressed confidence in her rehabilitation.
The petition details Wegmann’s monthly income and family financial obligations, showing consistent employment. Wegmann also volunteered as a gestational surrogate for friends in 2020-2021, delivering their child despite facing her own legal issues. Letters of support emphasized her commitment to helping others.
If reinstated, Wegmann intends to continue working as a family law paralegal but hopes to regain her license to provide full legal services. Her petition argues she has met all criteria for reinstatement by taking responsibility, cooperating with authorities, staying current on legal education, and proving rehabilitation through community service. A decision from the Supreme Court of Florida is pending.
The petition states:
“WHEREFORE, Petitioner prays that she be reinstated as a Member in Good Standing of The Florida Bar.”
According to avvo.com, Ms. Wegman is a family attorney. She attended the University of Miami School of Law, graduating in 2012. She acquired her law license in Florida in 2012.
