On Thursday, August 21, 2025, the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board issued a notice announcing the reprimand of attorney Laurel Meyers Byrnes. This decision follows a reciprocal discipline filing initiated by the Grievance Administrator in accordance with MCR 9.120(C).

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Laurel Meyers Byrnes,” with case no. 25-46-RD.

The reprimand is effective as of August 14, 2025, and stems from a suspension imposed by the Supreme Court of Colorado. On December 18, 2024, Byrnes was suspended for a period of one year and one day, a suspension that may be stayed upon her successful completion of a two-year probationary period, subject to specific conditions, as noted in the case People v. Laurel Meyers Byrnes, Colorado Discipline Case 24PDJ040.

In response to the Michigan Board’s order issued on May 28, 2025, both parties were instructed to notify the Board in writing within 21 days of any objections to the imposition of similar disciplinary action in Michigan or to indicate whether a hearing was requested. The deadline passed without any objections from either party, leading the Board to determine that Byrnes was in default.

Consequently, the Attorney Discipline Board mandated the reprimand for Byrnes in Michigan. Additionally, costs associated with the disciplinary proceedings were assessed against her, amounting to $1,511.54. Since the Michigan disciplinary system does not recognize stayed suspensions as a form of discipline, a reprimand was deemed to be a suitable and equivalent response to the Colorado suspension.

According to Avvo.com, Ms. Byrnes is a criminal defense attorney in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
