On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility announced the suspension of attorney Wesley Shelman Spears. The Supreme Court of Tennessee issued an order of reciprocal discipline, suspending Spears for one year. This suspension will run consecutively with a pre-existing two-year suspension.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Wesley Shelman Spears.”
The initial disciplinary action against Spears stems from a case in Connecticut, Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel v. Wesley S. Spears, Docket No. CV-22-6160733-S. The one-year suspension was handed down by the State of Connecticut Superior Court, Judicial District of Waterbury, in Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel v. Wesley S. Spears, Docket No. UWY-CV-24-6081813-S, via a Memorandum of Decision on April 3, 2025.
Following the Connecticut court’s decision, the Supreme Court of Tennessee issued a Notice of Reciprocal Discipline on July 15, 2025, directing Spears to justify why the Connecticut-imposed discipline should not be mirrored in Tennessee. Spears did not respond to the Court’s directive.
As a result of the suspension, Spears is obligated to adhere to Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9, Sections 28 and 30.4, which outline the duties and responsibilities of suspended attorneys, as well as the process for reinstatement.
According to Martindale.com, Mr. Spears attended the University of Florida, graduating in 1979. He acquired his law license in Tennessee in 1979.
