On Thursday, July 11, 2024, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department denied the application of attorney William Joseph Martin to resign from the New York State Bar for nondisciplinary reasons.

The case is entitled  “In the Matter of William Joseph Martin,” with case no. PM-136-24.

The Attorney Grievance Committee for the Third Judicial Department opposed Martin’s application because he is currently delinquent in his attorney registration for the 2024-2025 biennial period, as required under New York law.

By failing to meet his registration obligations, Martin is in violation of the state’s Rules of Professional Conduct and therefore subject to potential disciplinary action.

As a result, the New York Court ruled that Martin is ineligible for nondisciplinary resignation and denied his application, stating any future attempts would need to include proof of satisfying his registration requirements and being in good standing with the bar.

The Disposition states:

“ORDERED that William Joseph Martin’s application for permission to resign is denied.”

According to the filing, Mr. Martin acquired his law license in New York in 1971.
