On Tuesday, May 02, 2023, the Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana extended the two-year period of probation of attorney Maya Guntz Flowers after being suspended for mismanagement of a client’s trust account.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Maya Guntz Flowers,” with case no. 2021-B-01331.

On November 3, 2021, the respondent was suspended from the practice based on allegations of mismanagement of the client’s trust accounts. The terms of the respondent’s probation included a condition that she submit to semi-annual trust account auditing. Prior to the expiration of the probationary period, the parties filed a joint motion seeking to extend the respondent’s probation for a period of one year. In support, they asserted that the extension is warranted to address some issues uncovered during the prior trust account audits.

In light of these circumstances, the court agreed that the requested extension is appropriate. Accordingly, the court will extend the respondent’s probation for an additional year, subject to all conditions of probation imposed by the November 3, 2021 order and by the January 12, 2022 probation agreement, specifically that the respondent continues to submit semi-annual trust account audit reports to the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.

The Disposition states:

“Considering the Joint Motion to Extend Probation filed by the respondent and the ODC, it is ordered that the two-year period of probation imposed upon the respondent in In re: Flowers, 21 – 1331 (La. 11/3/21), 326 So. 3d 880, be extended for a period 05/02/23 2 of one year. All conditions of probation imposed by our November 3, 2021 order and by the January 12, 2022 probation agreement shall remain in full force and effect during the extended probationary period. Any failure by the respondent to comply with these conditions or any other misconduct during the probationary period may be grounds for revocation of probation and the imposition of the previously – deferred suspension or another discipline, as appropriate.”
