On Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Board of Immigration Appeals suspends attorney Ashkira Hassam Mohamud from practicing before the Board, the Immigration Courts, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for three years. The suspension was enacted following a petition for immediate suspension submitted by the Disciplinary Counsel representing both the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the DHS.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Ashkira Hassam Mohamud.”

This action comes in the wake of a three-year suspension imposed by the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board, which issued a summary order on November 15, 2024. A subsequent Memorandum Order of Suspension finalized the disciplinary action on November 20, 2024. Mohamud did not respond to the allegations outlined in the Joint Notice of Intent to Discipline, resulting in an automatic admission of the charges against him.

The regulatory framework under 8 C.F.R. § 1003.105 stipulates that a failure to file a timely response to such allegations limits the respondent’s ability to contest the proposed disciplinary measures. Consequently, the Board determined that the proposed suspension was warranted based on the circumstances of Mohamud’s case and the prior disciplinary action taken by the Virginia State Bar.

The Disposition states:

“The Board hereby suspends the respondent from practice before the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Immigration Courts. and DHS for 3 years, effective December 11, 2024.”

According to avvo.com, Mohamud is an attorney in Annandale, Virginia.
