On Friday, May 3, 2024, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals issued an order suspending former Trump lawyer John Eastman from practicing law in D.C. on an interim basis.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of John Eastman,” with case no. 2022-D065.
The order came after the State Bar Court of California recommended putting Eastman’s law license on “involuntary inactive” status. Eastman is best known for his work as a lawyer for former President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.
According to the D.C. Court of Appeals order, Eastman was suspended on an interim basis based on the discipline imposed by California authorities. The order cites Eastman’s docket number and states that he was suspended, but does not provide further details on the claims in the California case.
As reported in April 2024, California authorities began disbarment proceedings against Eastman in January for his role in efforts to undermine the 2020 presidential election results. Eastman helped Trump spread false claims of voter fraud and led legal challenges aimed at blocking certification of Joe Biden’s electoral college victory.
He also assisted in an unsuccessful plot to create fake slates of pro-Trump electors in states won by Biden. A California judge rejected claims that Eastman directly incited the January 6, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol but said his actions surrounding the election posed “exceptionally serious ethical violations.”
With the suspension in D.C., Eastman loses his ability to practice law in both California and Washington, D.C.
According to avvo.com, Mr. Eastman is an appeals attorney in Anaheim, California. He attended the University of Chicago Law School, graduating in 1995.
