On Monday, October 21, 2024, the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board issued a notice announcing the suspension of attorney Scott R. Baker’s law license. Following their review of the case, the Tri-County Hearing Panel #67 imposed a 120-day suspension.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Scott R. Baker,” with case no. 24-35-GA.
The charges cited Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct 1.7(b), 3.4, 4.2, 8.1(a)(1), 8.4(b), and Michigan Court Rules 9.104(6), and 9.104(1)(2)(3).
The order stemmed from a complaint filed by the Grievance Administrator regarding Baker’s conduct as a prosecuting attorney for the City of Novi. Baker admitted to engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a defendant and providing a false statement in response to a request for an investigation.
Specifically, the panel found Baker violated rules of professional conduct regarding conflicts of interest, fairness to opposing parties, unauthorized communication with represented parties, honesty in bar admissions and discipline, criminal or dishonest conduct reflecting on fitness as a lawyer, conduct prejudicing justice administration, and conduct damaging the legal profession.
Baker entered into a stipulation with the Grievance Administrator, admitting the complaint’s factual allegations and pleading no contest to the misconduct allegations. Based on the stipulation, the panel found Baker committed the violations.
The consent order, approved by the Attorney Grievance Commission, suspended Baker’s Michigan law license for 120 days effective October 19, 2024.
The Disposition states:
“In accordance with the stipulation of the parties, the hearing panel ordered that the respondent’s license to practice law in Michigan be suspended for 120 days and that he be subject to a condition relevant to the established misconduct. Total costs were assessed in the amount of $920.16.”
According to avvo.com, Mr. Baker is a criminal defense attorney in Royal Oak, Michigan. He attended the Wayne State University Law School, graduating in 2005. He acquired his law license in Michigan in 2006.
