On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, Garry D. Seaman, a personal injury attorney, had his law license suspended by the Montana Supreme Court after being convicted of homicide and attempted homicide charges.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Garry D. Seaman,” with case no. 23-0694.
The Montana Supreme Court invoked an interim suspension against Seaman based on his August 21, 2023, guilty pleas to one count of deliberate homicide and one count of attempted deliberate homicide in Lincoln County District Court. Seaman was sentenced to 60 years in prison on each count on October 5, 2023.
The events leading up to the license suspension began on May 21, 2022, when Seaman was charged with deliberate homicide, attempted deliberate homicide, and tampering with evidence related to an incident in Lincoln County.
After being notified of Seaman’s felony convictions on November 28, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel requested the Montana Supreme Court to determine if the convictions affected Seaman’s ability to practice law and sought his immediate suspension. The high court agreed in its December 19 order, citing Montana rules requiring suspension when an attorney is convicted of a criminal offense, impacting their ability to practice.
The Supreme Court order suspends Seaman’s law license pending the outcome of further disciplinary proceedings against him based on the felony convictions. Seaman remains in prison while the Office of Disciplinary Counsel now moves forward with filing a formal complaint with the Commission on Practice. His license suspension will remain in place until the disciplinary process concludes.
The Disposition states:
“IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED that Garry D. Seaman is placed on interim suspension from the practice of law in Montana, effective immediately and pending final disposition of a disciplinary proceeding predicated on his felony convictions, pursuant to MRLDE 23B.”
According to avvo.com, Mr. Seaman is a personal injury attorney in Kalispell, Montana. He attended the University of Montana. He acquired his law license in Montana in 1986.
