On Monday, May 13, 2024, the Supreme Court of Ohio accepted the resignation of attorney Owen David Kalis while disciplinary action remained pending against him.

The case is entitled “In the Matter of Owen David Kalis,” with case no. 2024-0550.

According to the Court order, Kalis had applied for retirement or resignation under Rule VI, Section 11 of the Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio. His application was referred to the disciplinary counsel for review. The disciplinary counsel’s confidential report on the matter was filed with the Court on April 19, 2024.

After considering the application and report, the court issued an order accepting Kalis’ resignation as an attorney in Ohio. The order imposed several requirements on Kalis. He must refund any unearned client fees and relinquish any client files or property. Kalis is also prohibited from practicing law in any capacity in Ohio or holding himself out as an attorney. He must also notify any current clients and opposing counsel of his resignation.

Additionally, the Court ordered Kalis to complete other documentation requirements within certain deadlines. He must prove he has satisfied all client notification, file transfer, and refund obligations. Kalis must also continue updating the Court on his address for any communications. The Court will retain jurisdiction over the disciplinary action that led to this resignation.

By accepting the resignation, the Supreme Court of Ohio effectively ended Kalis’ license to practice law in the state.

The Disposition states:

“On consideration thereof, it is ordered by the court that pursuant to Gov.Bar R. VI(II)(C), the resignation as an attorney and counselor at law is accepted as a resignation with disciplinary action pending.”

According to avvo.com, Mr. Kalis acquired his law license in Ohio in 2019.
