On Monday, September 16, 2024, the Idaho Supreme Court accepted the resignation of attorney Steven F. Schossberger in lieu of disciplinary proceedings.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Steven F. Schossberger”.
Schossberger had been charged in March 2023 with three criminal counts, including one felony count of rape, in Ada County. He pleaded not guilty initially but was ultimately found guilty by a jury trial in June 2024, for which he received a 20-year prison sentence of which 6.5 years were fixed, as well as being ordered to pay restitution.
Schossberger admitted his criminal conduct violated the rules of professional conduct regarding committing a criminal act, reflecting adversely on his fitness as a lawyer.
Rather than undergoing disciplinary proceedings, Schossberger agreed to resign from the practice of law in Idaho. The Supreme Court ordered he would not be allowed to reapply for admission to the Idaho State Bar for at least five years. If he did choose to reapply after that time, he would need to go through the entire bar admission process and overcome a presumption of being unfit to practice law.
With this order, Schossberger’s name was removed from the Idaho Supreme Court roster of lawyers, and his right to practice law in the state courts was terminated.
According to Avvo, Mr. Schossberger was a real estate attorney in Eagle, Idaho. He obtained his law license in Idaho in 1996.
