On Monday, April 7, 2025, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court issued an order terminating the suspension of Hancock County Probate. Judge William B. Blaisdell, IV, while simultaneously imposing an immediate interim suspension from the practice of law. This decision follows a Second Expedited Petition filed by the Board of Overseers of the Bar, which argued that Blaisdell’s continued non-compliance with court orders warranted further disciplinary action.
The court had previously suspended Blaisdell’s practice for one year due to violations of several Rules of Professional Conduct, including failing to comply with court mandates. During a hearing held via Zoom on April 4, 2025, Blaisdell appeared pro se, meaning he represented himself, while Attorney Sheridan represented the Board. The court reviewed the petition and allowed both parties to present their arguments.
Blaisdell, who has been a member of the Maine Bar since 1999 and is based in Ellsworth, Maine, had been under scrutiny for not adhering to specific conditions set forth in an earlier disciplinary order dated August 16, 2024. The court found that he did not fulfill obligations outlined in the order, particularly those requiring compliance with all court orders in any legal matters where he was involved. Notably, he faced contempt of court charges for the second time on February 24, 2025, which further underscored his failure to meet the stipulated requirements.
The Board of Overseers argued that Blaisdell’s actions posed a threat to clients, the public, and the integrity of the legal profession. The court, upon reviewing the evidence, concluded that his lack of compliance indicated a potential for imminent harm, justifying the decision to terminate his suspension and impose a new interim suspension.
As a result of the court’s ruling, Blaisdell is now suspended from practicing law effective April 11, 2025. Additionally, the court appointed Co-Receivers to manage his law practice during this period. The court’s order aims to protect the interests of justice and ensure adherence to legal standards.
