On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Supreme Court of California disbarred attorney Robert E. Riemer from practicing law in the state.
The case is entitled “In the Matter of Robert E. Riemer,” with case no. S285407.
The case against Riemer began in October 2022 when the Office of Chief Trial Counsel was assigned to investigate misconduct allegations. On April 12, 2023, the State Bar served Riemer with a Notice of Disciplinary Charges by certified mail to his address of record, but it was returned undeliverable. Additional efforts by the State Bar to contact Riemer in April and July 2023, including searches of public records and his online State Bar member profile, were unsuccessful.
Riemer failed to file a timely response to the Notice of Disciplinary Charges as required. In August 2023, the State Bar filed a Motion for Entry of Default in the State Bar Court. Despite properly serving the motion, Riemer did not respond within the 10-day deadline. On August 30, 2023, the State Bar Court entered Riemer’s default for his failure to respond.
With the default entered, the allegations in the Notice of Disciplinary Charges were deemed admitted. The Notice alleged Riemer violated ethics rules by committing acts of moral turpitude, misconduct, and violations of the Business and Professions Code. In January 2024, after Riemer’s default was not set aside within the required 90 days, the State Bar filed a Petition for Disbarment After Default in the State Bar Court.
The State Bar Court was required to recommend disbarment given the evidence that Riemer was properly served, reasonable efforts were made to notify him, his default was properly entered, and the admitted facts warranted discipline.
On August 12, 2024, the Supreme Court issued an order officially disbarring Riemer from the practice of law in California. The court also imposed monetary sanctions and costs against Riemer.
The Disposition states:
“The court orders that Robert E. Riemer (Respondent), State Bar Number 94337, is disbarred from the practice of law in California and that Respondent’s name is stricken from the roll of attorneys.”
According to avvo.com, Mr. Riemer is an entertainment attorney in Van Nuys, California. He attended the Southwestern University School of Law. He acquired his law license in California in 1980.
